December 3, 2008 - Christmas MemePosted by Ginafish |
Welcome to the Christmas edition of getting to know your friends. I invite you to participate with your blog! Just copy and paste the entire entry into your blog, replace the answers with your own, and then leave a comment so I can see your responses!
1. Wrapping paper or gift bags? Both, if it's a gift in a box, I'll wrap it, otherwise, a bag is easier.
2. Real tree or Artificial? Artificial. I'm allergic to cedar and pine trees. :P
3. When do you put up the tree? I try to do it within two days after Thanksgiving. This year, December 2nd. Woohoo!
4. When do you take the tree down? December 26th! My daughter's birthday is December 28th, so I try to make the house 'regular' so her birthday isn't competing.
5. Do you like eggnog? I drink Silk Soy Nog. Once again, another allergy is involved...eggs and dairy! I'm the only one in my house who likes nog, so I get the whole quart to myself! Yippee!!
6. Favorite gift received as a child? As a young child? I was enthusiastic about most of them except clothes. I have a picture of me in my underoos jumping with joy at a Connect Four game.
7. Hardest person to buy for? My son. He's at an age where there are three types of toys available. Action figures, complex lego or building structures, and remote control vehicles. *sigh* I think I'll just jump ahead 40 years and buy him socks and nuts.
8. Easiest person to buy for? My daughter. She never plays with any of her toys anyway. She'd rather sit in her brothers room and watch him play. Ay yi yi!
9. Do you have a nativity scene? I have a couple that were given to us.
10. Mail or email Christmas cards? Both.
11. Worst Christmas gift you ever received? Any time it involved getting a doll.
12. Favorite Christmas Movie? White Christmas and Holiday Inn with Fred Astaire and Bing Crosby, featuring the music of Irving Berlin. Also, Elf.
13. When do you start shopping for Christmas? About December 15th.
14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present? Only the pink flamingo my family regifts every year.
15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas? Fruit cake. No orange slices, lots of nuts.
16. Lights on the tree? Big old fashioned bulbs, multicolored...this year.
17. Favorite Christmas song? The Drummer Boy, The whole Nutcracker Suite.
18. Travel at Christmas or stay at home? Home in the am, my parents at lunch, in-laws in the evening.
19. Can you name all of Santa's reindeer's? Only if I sing Rudolph first.
20. Angel on the treetop or a star? Star.
21. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning? Morning
22. Most annoying thing about this time of the year? Commercialism.
23. What theme or color are you using? ...Theme? Color? Um..lots of snowmen, santas, lots of balls.... and red...green... I haven't had a theme or color since before kids... they kind of take over.
24. Favorite for Christmas dinner. Pink Salad: one can condensed milk, one tub cool whip, one can cherry pie filling, one can of drained pineapple tidbits.
25. What do you want for Christmas this year? Diana Gabaldon books. And to see my family relax and enjoy themselves.
26. Do you have a favorite ornament? I have a few of favorite decorations: an old ceramic table top tree that plugs in with little bulbs, a carosel that plays 20 minutes of music with wind chimes, and a clear glass angel I bought while honeymooning in Eureka Springs.
Now it's your turn!! |

November 30, 2008 - Thanksgiving with Yin and YangPosted by Ginafish |
Thanksgiving has come and gone, and I gained the obligatory five pounds I'm pretty sure. It was all emotional, stress eating.

The week of Thanksgiving was a pretty dramatic week. The founder of Isara, Kirk, was suppose to embark on his journey to India and Africa, pop back over to Bangkok for an award and fly off to a carefree vacation in America. Instead, he spent who knows how many hours in the Bangkok international airport while the PAD protesters took over. All flights in and out of a huge international airport. While I can't imagine the stress of being in the airport, I can sympathize with any of you who hunted the internet for any and all slideshows pertaining to Bangkok's airport for about 24 hours. I was just about 70% sure that if Kirk was in a photo with a huge crowd, that I'd find it and be able to post it on Isara as proof that he was indeed leading the mediation efforts.

How many of you searched in photos??
So the news comes that he's canceling this portion of Isara's trip. Followed quickly was the news of the events in Mumbai, India. The violence was surprising and targeted at foreigners. All of a sudden, it was peachy keen that there wasn't any big trips happening for Isara.
Course, soon as Kirk got back to Nong Khai, the isara.org website decided to take a nosedive. I must say, without the forum up, I'm having a lot of withdrawal from keeping tabs on my friends. I might actually break down and use the phone to see if everyone is okay!
While all at Isara has been stressful though, my family's own experience with Thanksgiving has been very relaxing!
Thanksgiving breakfast at the in-laws was uneventful, which is in itself a noteworthy event. When you get together with 23 other people, opinions differ greatly. After a big breakfast, my family went next door to play Wii. I have never played with a Wii system before, and for the first time in my life, I didn't feel like a complete klutz while bowling! I wasn't a great bowler, but at least I didn't get a single gutter ball or bounce it into the next lane, or have it drop behind me. Yes, usually all those things happen to me during a regular game.

Then we had a late lunch with my parents doing the whole turkey, rolls, and pecan pie. The kids enjoyed watching Wall-E and the adults enjoyed visiting.
Home on Friday was a day busy with packing and running errands. With hubby off work starting Sunday, we decided a little mini-vacation was in order for the weekend. But to read anything about that, you'll have to check out my other blog. |

October 29, 2008 - Phone SurveysPosted by Ginafish |
Around election time, the phone seems to ring a bit more with 'survey phone calls'. So it's no surprise when the phone rings and it's a stranger.
"Hello, I am from Blah, blah, blah Marketing Group. We are conducting a survey regarding food and grocery purchases, is the lady of the house available?"
(Internal dialogue at this point, is *whew* it's not political, and who do I sound like?)
"Yes, this is she," I respond.
"Very good, can you tell me how many children are living in your residence, between the ages of two and 18?"
"Two."
"Oh," he sighed with obvious disappointment. "Not enough." Click.
Not even a goodbye! And since when did two children not become enough to have an opinion about groceries?? I'm pretty sure I feed them, at least I did before they went through a bout of stomach flu last week. :D
What's your reaction when you get survey phone calls? Do you get them?

August 3, 2008 - Dancing King!Posted by Ginafish |
Yes, of course, I blogged about the entire karaoke event at my main blog but I had to put in some thoughts here as well, because after all, this is the ISARABLOG!
I think the entire event went off great! Isara had supporters from all over the world from all sorts of venues: dvxuser.com, gta forums, mgs forum, wimberley players, his family (it's a clan really), and his Thai students.
It will be great to see what sort of money was raised when all the dust has settled. And I'm dreaming.
I'm dreaming of all the good things that will come from these huge blessings given to Isara. Helmets for school kids, a movie day for an orphanage, more trash bags for a big clean up day at the beach....
If you enjoyed the karaoke show, that's great. Just don't forget that all the donations will be used and spent, and then where will Isara be? Isara will still be needing your clicks to fulfill it's mission. So keep spreading the word. Your clicks can make a huge difference.
*off the soapbox for today :) |

Only one? Climbing trees.
Salad
Pick one: butter, margarine, olive oil.

I'd be fluent in spanish. I have taken many classes, but haven't retained much other than being able to read it alright. After that Thai. :)

Finish this sentence: In 5 years I expect to be…
In 5 years I expect to be a cranky perimenopausal woman doing another load of laundry with hormonal teenagers pushing the limits wishing I could be 65. Hey, I'm a realist. You didn't ask where I wanted to be in 5 years...

June 16, 2008 - Busy weekPosted by Ginafish |
I've been neglecting my isarablog lately (and my other one as well, truth be told) so I thought I should post a quick note while I had a minute.
Being a stay at home mom has changed my life dramatically in a many ways. One way which it changed, was to limit how much I leave the house. For a few years, it was a sort of self-imposed restriction, the babies are young, they need a schedule, I don't want to lug the strollers out just to walk around a store when I don't need anything... that sort of self-imposition.
The last few years, it's gravitated toward more of a "have to drive less" mentality as gas prices have been inching and leaping up while my budget for gas has more or less stayed the same for eight years. My budget would have driven me a lot farther in the earlier years of staying home than it will do now. So now it's more of a "leaving the house when necessary" frame of mind. Which puts me at leaving the house to shop, church, and visit family about three or four times a week.
This might not suit a lot of people, but as I become older, I find myself becoming more of a home body, and not minding being at home, because if I want to, I can take the kids and we can go somewhere. It's not like being stuck at home during an ice storm where you couldn't leave even if you wanted to. And despite trying to make a budget for gas, it still remains pretty flexible. So if I wanted to be gone from home seven days a week, I could...I just don't.
So this week, I am helping with a project that requires me to go somewhere for three days in a row. I have to set an alarm, I have to get myself and the kids ready and be out of the house at a set time. I have to *ack!* do a routine that is normal and average for a lot of people. But it makes the world feel rushed for me so I don't like it. I've lived rush. But then I didn't know any better. So I'd like for Thursday to get here asap!
And I'd like to pose a question to any readers who stumble across this: Do you feel rushed if you have a regular routine or job that requires you to follow a time schedule? If you don't have a regular schedule with appointments and of watching the clock, do you have a relaxed schedule? If it's relaxed, do you embrace and look forward to having to "go go go"? Or does having to "go go go" make you feel rushed? I know there are a variety of lifestyles on Isara: volunteers with a minimal schedule, to people still doing the 9-5 workload, or the school schedule but with a break now taking place. Leave a comment and say what you think. :)

May 2, 2008 - Hungry Hungry FridaysPosted by Ginafish |
Appetizer
What was your favorite cartoon when you were a child?
Pepe Le Pew for animation, but for Saturday Morning, nothing beat "Land of the Lost"

Soup
Pretend you are about to get a new pet. Which animal would you pick, and what would you name it?
If it weren't for allergies, I'd own a cat. I'd have to wait and see it's personality before naming it. Names of cats I've had: Wobbles, Pounce, and Fuzzy. Personality based names... that's how I roll.
Salad
On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being highest, how much do you enjoy getting all dressed up for a special occasion?
This is hard to say. I like to look nice, but the actual going to the effort is stressful, and then the itching to return to 'normal' after the event is manic. So being dressed: 8. Getting to that point: 3.
Main Course
What kind of music do you listen to while you drive?
If the kids are with me, we compromise. If I'm by myself, my cds cranked to right below blowing the speakers.
Dessert
When was the last time you bought a clock? And in which room did you put it?
About a year ago, I bought a little yellow car clock for my son's room that you can record a message on to use as the alarm. However, when I returned home, they had figured out why his old alarm clock wasn't working, fixed it, and now the little yellow car has sat in it's box for more than a year. So.. a year, and it's still in the box.
Please leave your web address in the comment area so I can visit your feast!

April 25, 2008 - Surprise VacationPosted by Ginafish |
As a family, we were overdo for a mini-vacation. We like to get away for short trips by camping, or longer trips in a travel trailer. This time around, we only had 24 hours and setting up camp and pulling a trailer didn't make sense. So we made a hotel reservation and decided to surprise the kids.
Now the kids knew that we were going somewhere, they just didn't know where it would be. For a seven year old and a five year old, this is like playing an ongoing game of "Let's see if our parents will crack if we ask them eight times a day where we are going." It's a fun game if you can stand it. We were pretty sure that our kids would enjoy the surprise so we kept our lips sealed.
The first day, we drove to Mountain View, Arkansas. It was the kind of twisty turny road that makes you wonder why they bother putting up a speed sign when no one in their right mind could drive that fast. We drove through a tiny town that involved turns so sharp, we went 15 m.p.h. and dubbed it the 'drunk driver catcher'. No one slightly buzzing could have driven through that town. We were in the mountains for sure!
Once we checked in, we realized how sheltered our kids are. The last time they stayed in a hotel with us was 2006? Two years ago? They immediately forget what indoor voices are and rules about not bouncing on the beds. In fact, they leapt from one bed to the next. Over and over. Luckily, we didn't have neighbors yet so we let that run it's course till they were tired and ready to go eat.
The next morning, we grilled the kids at breakfast. What do you think the surprise will be? Our daughter guessed a trip to the mall, our son hoped it was a trip to a space station.
Instead, we took them to Blanchard Springs Caverns
For a while, they both enjoyed it. In fact, our son was speechless with excitement. This really was his kind of adventure. After our daughter admired "pretty rocks" continuously for forty minutes, she was done but I can't blame her...she was tired, and the cave was pretty dark. She's gets nervous in the dark, and when she's tired, any emotion she is feeling can be multiplied by 10. But she still did great and kept her panic attacks to whispers and whimpers. Ethan is ready to go back for his 10th birthday when he is old enough to wear the explorer gear and really go deep into the caves. Dad is going to have to start rock climbing so he'll be able to keep up with him.

This cave has only been open to the public since 1973 and is a living cave so water is still dripping in and building things. It has a couple of huge rooms called Cathedral rooms, columns that are 60 feet tall, and of course, bats that luckily stay away from the tour area.

So overall the short trip was a great surprise and we all enjoyed it. We were lucky enough to run into some one who took our photo for us.

And yes, we went to visit the Blanchard Spring that created the caverns and guess what my husband suggested I do? Do the Isara Pose!

So where are YOUR vacation pictures with the Isara pose? |

February 28, 2008 - A rare thingPosted by Ginafish |
I did something about two weeks ago that I haven't done in over 14 years. I applied for a job.
When my first child came along, I decided to stay at home to give him the best first year ever. At the end of one year, I couldn't pull myself away and by the end of the second year, I was pregnant again. Somehow, the years have added up and this year will be the eighth year I've been a Stay at Home Mom.
It gets really comfortable after a while. If I had my way, I'd not join the work force ever again. I think too many American families suffer from the "Let's have it all" mentality. Let's have new cars, eat out three times a week, go on vacation at Disney World while the kids are still young, and since our kids need all the best, enroll them in at least three after school activities each. While that lifestyle might suit a lot of people, I like things slower.
Our family hasn't suffered from only living on one income, we've just learned to evaluate how to spend our money differently. All that's to say that returning to work after being home for so long isn't about the money. Of course, additional income will allow us to put more away in a nest egg and perhaps lead to retirements at age 63 rather than 70 and to donate to more good causes and neither of those are such a bad thing.
It has to do partly with the fact that in the last year, my husband acquired his dream job. However, his dream job only pays him for 20 hours a week and to make up for it, he has another 20 hour a week job that he's not so crazy about. Before this last year, he had worked 7 years for a company that increased his stress level to very unhealthy levels so much that if he could have really physically exploded, he would have. And so it's with gratitude for him sticking it out all these years at a job he hated and now one that he's not completely satisfied with that has lead me to consider entering the job market.
We figure that if I work, then he can quit the part time job he's not so crazy about and soak up the joy he gets from his dream job. And since he'd only work 20 hours a week, he can become our housekeeper.
The job I have applied for is an awesome job. We'll have no clue until about July if I'm being considered for it. The job doesn't start until September. It follows the public school calendar with two weeks off at Christmas and three months off in the summer. To me (and for the kids), that's an awesome plus.
Also, it involves driving around for Monday and Tuesday, working in an office for Wednesday, and then a meeting on Thursday with Friday, Saturday, and Sunday's off. I really enjoy driving so that's a great plus. And three days off instead of the typical two is a nice perk too.
Basically, I have no intention of seriously looking for work until September since my youngest begins school in August. But after applying for this job, if it doesn't pan out, anything else would suck. I'd like to think I was entering the job market for a job that I really enjoyed, and I think I'd really enjoy this job I've applied for.
The only other job I'd enjoy is getting paid to moderate Isara full time. But then, I'd rather see all the revenue keep going where it's going...to projects not people.
*sigh* I suppose if this job I've applied for doesn't work out, I can stay home a little longer waiting on one with a good fit. Thanks for reading me rattling on. |

What is your middle name? Would you change any of your names if you could? If so, what would you like to be called?
My middle name is Rochelle. It means little rock in French. I like all my names.
Soup
If you were a fashion designer, which fabrics, colors, and styles would you probably use the most?
I'd design a line of washable silky polyester muumuu's. I'm all over comfort and easily washable clothing.
Salad
What is your least favorite chore, and why?
Laundry. I think we should have disposable clothing. With dusting as a close second b/c I'm allergic to house dust. (do those allergy tests have a category for 'business dust'? Why call it house dust if they don't? Odd.)
Main Course
What is something that really frightens you, and can you trace it back to an event in your life?
As for frighten versus scary, I think fright is a very temporary state. Not something you worry about long term or that you have a fear of, so that rules out being frightened of harm coming to my family. So for frightened...I'll go with mice. In the house. Running across my path. Yes, that has frightened me before. In fact, I called my husband at work in a panic.
Dessert
Where are you sitting right now? Name 3 things you can see at this moment.
I'm sitting at my computer desk and I see my coffee, an iTunes gift card and my printer. How exciting is that?

Make up a word and give us its definition.
Turd-murkel-idurd - that indescribable brown, green, orange color. Can't take credit for this word, it's one my in-laws made up and use consistently. Can't take credit for the picture either, found it on the net.

Soup

Rudolph Youtube video with lyrics

Salad
What’s at the top of your Christmas wish list this year?

Main Course
Name a scent that reminds you of someone special in your life.

Barns filled with hay, cows with corn feed, mud and manure, smells like this remind me of my Great Grandpa Colvett and Grandpa Roy working on the farm. They are both gone now, but the smell still reminds me.
Dessert
Who is someone on television that you feel probably shouldn’t be, and why?

Star Jones is mean. She should go back to law and leave tv alone. |

What is your favorite carnival/amusement park ride?

Soup
How do you react in uncomfortable social situations?
Depends...if I'm uncomfortable because I'm nervous, I giggle inappropriately. If I'm uncomfortable because of what someone else is doing, I give them the Eagle eye stare down.

Salad
On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being highest, how much do you enjoy discussing deep, philosophical topics?
It depends on whom I'm talking to. With hubby, we discuss things quite often, but I only enjoy it on scale of 5. If I think I can win them over to my way of thinking, then an 8.
Main Course
Did you get a flu shot this year? If not, do you plan to?
Not usually, but might this year. Being allergic to eggs, I tend to play it by ear and see how serious the season will be.
Dessert
Approximately how many hours per week do you spend watching television?
No clue. Sometimes less than 5, sometimes every evening for 2 or 3 hours. Just depends. Now that Dancing with the Stars is over, the only thing I want to turn the tv on is for "Men in Trees".
